stargazing

We might be half-way through 2015 but there are still 7 upcoming stargazing events that you won’t want to miss.

July 10: Get a Glimpse of Venus

In case you missed it the first time, this is your chance to catch it again. It actually appears with the greatest brilliance on this date.

August 12: Perseid Meteor Shower

This meteor shower is typically considered one the best annual showers. This year, it happens to align near a new moon so the skies will be dark and a beautiful backdrop to see the meteors.

September 4: Last Quarter Moon

This one will only be visible over eastern North America, but you will get a chance to see the Last Quarter moon pass in front of the brightest stars in the sky, Aldebaran. If you’re not on the east side, November 26 will bring another alignment that is visible over a much wider area.

September 27-28: Lunar Eclipse

This will bring a total eclipse of the moon in conjunction with one of the closets points the moon will be to the Earth.

October 26: Double Planet

Not really 2 sets of double planets, but another double planet this year! This time you’ll see Venus and Jupiter separated by just over 1 degree.

November 5-12: Taurid Meteor Shower

This meteor shower, commonly known as the “Halloween Fireballs,” start to appear mid-October but peak from November 5-12.

December 13-14: Geminid Meteor Shower

This is at the top of the list for most meteor experts. The moon will be a narrow crescent and set early so that the backdrop should be perfect. They are predicting you can see up to 120 meteors per hour!
